Tradition: Considered to be the first black tea, Lapsang Souchong originated in China's Wuyi Mountains (Fujian province) during the 17th-century Qing Dynasty. Soldiers forced tea producers to flee their villages. Upon returning, the villagers found their tea leaves had oxidized, turning dark, so they dried them over pinewood fires, creating the signature smokey flavor.
